Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were quantified with commercial ELISA kits (Hengyuan Biotechnology, China). Intracellular ROS generation was assessed by monitoring the oxidation of 2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA; Molecular Probes, USA) following established procedures. The incubation temperature is 36 ± 0.5 °C, the incubation time is 30 min and the incubation is done in the dark.20 The INT reduction method, which employs 2-(p-iodophenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyltetrazolium chloride, was applied to assess the electron transfer system (ETS) activity in digestate samples, following the procedure in Text S4.
